Can You See Clearly Now?

Driving the rental car through a very heavy rainstorm, I was having trouble seeing the street signs clearly. I was on a trip in an unfamiliar city and feeling stressed because I wasn’t sure which way to go.

My anxiety was rising as I realized I was late for my meeting, trying to adjust the unfamiliar settings of the fancy windshield wipers, and praying that I wouldn’t hit the car in front of me. I couldn’t see well at all. I had made a huge mistake not taking time to learn how everything worked in the rental car before leaving the garage, so here I was unable to move forward.

My phone started ringing. I knew it was probably one of the people I was supposed to be meeting with, but there was no way I could answer it while I had a death grip on the steering wheel.

I needed this storm to settle down so I could see where I was, and where I needed to go.

A familiar oldie came on the car radio, “I can see clearly now, the rain has gone…”. It made me chuckle and stop and take a big breath. I needed a quiet spot for a moment, so I pulled over the first chance I had.

I began praying out loud that the Lord would be my clarity and that He would direct my way.

The windshield was fogged up, but after pulling out the instruction manual, I finally figured out how the rental car’s wipers worked. I sat there for a few minutes more, allowing my heart rate to get back to normal.

As I prepared to get back on the busy street, I realized how much clearer things were. The wipers were providing the clarity I needed. My phone rang again; it was a concerned friend I was supposed to be meeting. I was able to get better directions and assure them I was on my way. My breathing was back to normal and I was now smiling.

What a difference a few moments of clarity makes.

There are times in our lives when we feel foggy about God’s calling for us. We are enduring some kind of struggle with fear or a storm of uncertainty and we are unsure of what lies ahead.

We don’t know where to turn, or what to do, to the point of wondering if God even has a direction for us.

But gratefully, we serve a God who calls us personally.

Moses had spent 40 years tending his father-in-law’s sheep. Forty years was a long time for him to reflect on his life; a Jewish boy raised as an Egyptian prince, until the day he lost his cool and everything changed. He had been hiding ever since. Perhaps Moses believed because of his mistakes, God would never use him again.

But then we read in Exodus about the day Moses was out with the sheep when he saw a bush on fire though curiously it wasn’t burning up.

“When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, ‘Moses! Moses!’ And Moses said, ‘Here I am.’” Exodus 3:4

God was calling Moses specifically for a unique purpose; to rescue His people. Mistakes and all, God had still been preparing to use Moses and He continues to call us too.

The precious blood of Jesus Christ has covered over our mistakes, our sins, and He can redeem our pasts. God loves and calls you personally to take part in the redemption story of His Son, Jesus.

But if you are familiar with Moses’ story, you know that he was hesitant about this calling.

In Exodus 4:13, “Moses said, ‘Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.”  Moses was struggling and doubting himself - I can’t speak well, I work with sheep all day, I can’t do this, God, I’m afraid.

Can you relate? I know I sure can.

But God’s call to us is not just personal, but also persistent. God knew Moses had fears, but He also wanted Moses to know He would provide everything Moses would ever need to walk obediently in God’s calling.

Even so, in a beautiful picture of God’s gracious love and compassion for Moses, He sent him someone to come alongside and help, his brother Aaron.

While our own fears and doubts can cloud up our view of His calling, God doesn’t just think that He made a mistake in calling you. He persists and sometimes even brings someone alongside you to help you step forward.

His sufficiency brings clarity and assures us of His direction. Sometimes we just have to get to a quiet place, spend time in His instruction manual, so we can be assured we are hearing from Him.

But once we see clearly, everything can change.

Because of Moses’ surrender, history was changed for God’s people. They were able to experience freedom after many years of captivity.

Because of your surrender, history can change for more of God’s people. He still wants to rescue His people.
